Pair ENGLISH Sterling SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS-Greek Revival-HAWKSWORTH, EYRE & CO

Description

For sale is an interesting pair of English sterling Greek Revival salt & pepper shakers, London, 1896-97 by Hawksworth, Eyre & Co. Ltd..  The shakers are 4 ½ inches tall by 1 5/8 inches square and together weigh 135 grams.  The shakers  have domed slide-in lids.  The bodies have ram’s heads at the corners with laurel swags, floral roundels, and stylized hooves at the corners of the bases.  They are both monogrammed “LLE” on the sides as shown.  The pieces are marked on the edge of the bases with [H.E. & Co. / Ltd.] and London hallmarks for 1896-97.  The tops are also fully hallmarked, on the rims.  The shakers are also stamped with a four part star, and are numbered “18/ 10996” and “24 / 10996” on the insides of the feet.
Condition on the shakers is fair.  One lid rim has been reattached, and there is some corrosion in the interiors and some stubborn salt spots, mainly on the lids.  They stand fairly straight but wobble slightly.  A fun set of English shakers!
